BWW Review: Mildred’s Umbrella’s DRY LAND

November 6, 2016
Dry Land at Mildred's Umbrella Theatre

I reviewed Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company’s production of Dry Land in October of 2016. Here’s a snippet.

DRY LAND centers around Amy and Ester, two teenagers on the swim team at a Florida high school. When Amy decides to terminate an unplanned pregnancy, she and Ester must wade through the difficulties of teen pregnancy while dealing with the everyday tumults of adolescence like bullying, betrayal, romance, and friendship. Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company brings this weighty play to Spring Street Studios through November 5, 2016.

BWW Review: The Bear and The Proposal at Classical Theatre Company

October 10, 2016

I got the opportunity to see and review The Bear and The Proposal by Anton Chekhov at Classical Theatre Company, this past weekend. It was delightful. Here’s a snippet of my review:

Anton Chekhov was put under the spotlight when his work was performed by the famous Moscow Art Theatre under Konstantin Stanislavski’s ensemble toward the end of the nineteenth century. But don’t let the age of the work fool you into thinking you’ll have work to decipher the language. Firstly, Chekhov is one of the main theatre artists who modernized the way theatre is written and performed. But also, Jon Johnston continues to masterfully tell classical stories to modern day audiences. So, when you enter the theater in Chelsea Market, you’ll know you’re in good hands.

“THE NETHER is a chilling tale about how the division between technology and our lives begin to blur, and the ethical dilemmas that result when access to this technology fall into the wrong hands. Engaging performances from an all-star cast, unique character development, notable set and lighting designs, and intricate storytelling had me on the edge of my seat for its 85 minute run time.”

Lucas Hnath‘s THE CHRISTIANS is about Pastor Paul, who took his church from a storefront to a megachurch of thousands. While giving a sermon, Paul celebrates the anniversary of the church and the completed repayment of debt that helped get the church to its new status. Paul also gives his radical new viewpoint on life and Christianity, which uproots the basis of what the congregation believes.

THE CHRISTIANS was nominated for two 2016 Drama Desk Awards, two 2016 Lortel Awards, and won the 2016 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the 2016 Kesselring Prize.”

“Anthony unexpectedly appears in his classmate’s room to seek her help in completing a project on the night before it is due. Through an emotionally tumultuous journey, Anthony and Caroline delve into the mysteries of Walt Whitman‘s “Leaves of Grass”, unaware that something deeper has brought them together.

I AND YOU won the 2014 ATCA/Steinberg New Play Award and was a Susan SmithBlackburn Prize finalist. The play, directed by Seth Gordon and starring Melissa Molano and Mateo Mpindzi-Mott, is making its regional premiere at Stages Repertory Theatre and will close May 22, 2016.”

I AND YOU is an emotional roller coaster, it tugs at your heart, and it’s a story you won’t soon forget.
